VideoPress block forced in editor despite being disabled #44891

Description

Impacted plugin

VideoPress, Jetpack

Quick summary

When a site has the Jetpack plugin active with VideoPress disabled, dragging a video file into the block editor always forces a VideoPress block and the upload fails.

A banner is shown at the top of the block with "Enable Jetpack module to continue using VideoPress," but there's no way to dismiss the notice or transform to a Core video block to use the default WordPress experience instead.

Both uploading a video file on the Media Library page and to a manually added Core video both work as expected, but this may not be an obvious path.

If a site tries VideoPress, uses their one free video (or possibly has a paid plan but has exceeded their storage quota), decides it's not for them, and then disables VaultPress through the setting, the same behavior is observed with a different error message. This is potentially even more confusing and could lead the user to believe that they must pay to upload videos to WordPress at all.

There's also an additional layer to this. When a site has exhausted their quota and the VideoPress block is hidden through the block editor Preferences -> Blocks -> Media section of the options, then the VideoPress block displays a third variation.

However, when a site has VideoPress disabled and the VideoPress block hidden AND they have not exausted their quota, the default WordPress Core video block is used when dragging a video into the editor.

The video file format does not seem to matter. I tested with MOV, AVI, and MP4 and the behavior happens with all of them.

Steps to reproduce

Before using up the 1 free video:

  • Activate Jetpack.
  • Disable VideoPress on the Jetpack -> Settings -> Performance page.
  • Create a new post or edit an existing one.
  • Drag a video file to the editor.
  • Observe a VideoPress block is inserted instead of a default Video block.
  • Upload fails with "Failed to upload your video. Please try again."

After using up the 1 free video:

  • Activate Jetpack.
  • Disable VideoPress on the Jetpack -> Settings -> Performance page.
  • Create a new post or edit an existing one.
  • Drag a video file to the editor.
  • Observe a VideoPress block is inserted instead of a default Video block.
  • Upload fails with "You have used your free video. Upgrade to a VideoPress plan to unlock more videos and 1TB of storage.
