Having different attachments for weapons will definitely spice up the gameplay of The Long Dark. It started with the idea of projectiles instead of hitscan - making a scope attachment an actual viable option. From there some prototypes have been worked on but nothing concrete, it was purely to see if scopes were possible at all. They are, however I'm unsure if it's possible to change the animation of aiming down the sights - and there was some funky business about using a camera component for the scopes - so I'll probably also have to use a different method. For these reasons, I'll probably start of with something much easier - for example barrel attachments. Keep in mind, it's best to only add attachments that will serve a purpose, flash hiders will kind of be a useless addition.

This system won't be easy to integrate - it'll requires a lot of planning and execution, from how attachments will be put on weapons - saving them across saves and scenes, UI work and how each attachment affects gameplay etc.

  • Barrels (Suppressors, Muzzle Brakes, Flash Hiders).
  • Grips (Bipod, Vertical Grip, Horizontal Grip).
  • Tactical (Laser Sight, Rangefinder, Tactical Flashlight).
  • Sights (Scopes, other general sights like Red Dots etc).
  • Greased Bolts (Quicker Bolt Cycling).
  • Gun Slings (Equips guns quicker).
  • Stocks (Don't know if it's possible).
