Best practice for reanming a tag

I am wondering if I would break anything in the stored data when I want to rename a tag by going through the *.data files and rename them via sed or similar.

Or is there a better practice to do so?

Thank you very much for the tool. It has been my long time "go to" for project time tracking.

I have done before like:

timew retag $(
    timew export oldname |
    jq -r '"@\(.[].id)"'
) newname

but a timew rename command would be nice.
