Description
What is the issue?
When the launcher uses a strict grid for their home menu some issues can arise, mainly:
- With an odd number of columns, widgets can't have equal widths. Either a gap in the middle will be made or one of the widgets will have to be bigger to fill the empty space.
- With an even number of columns, there is no center, meaning that symmetry is enforced to everything even when it's not needed.
- A widget can be too big or too small depending on the grid used, requiring some tinkering to get a satisfactory result.
The solution is to be able to place icons/folders/widgets in between rows and/or columns.
What could be gained with this feature?
- Generally more freedom in where someone can place something on their home screen, making some uncommon layouts (e.g. honeycomb) much more accessible.
- More fine tuned control over a widget's size (e.g. making a wigdet 1 column x 1.5 rows).
Any examples of implementation?
Nova Launcher, to my knowledge is the only Android Launcher to have this setting. In the launcher's settings, go to Home Screen, then Grid Size and select the checkbox that allows placing items in between the grid (not sure about the names of each setting because I can't change the language to English).
