Do you have plans to add OpenSearch support for both full-text and vector search?
If this is already on your roadmap, could I help with the implementation? And if it’s not yet planned, would it be okay if I helped implement it?

Hi, thanks a lot for your enthusiasm and interest in contributing!

Currently, OpenSearch support is not on our roadmap. ApeRAG uses Elasticsearch as its default search engine. While we’re not against adding OpenSearch support, there are a number of considerations we would need to carefully evaluate before moving forward.

Elasticsearch is a mature and widely adopted open-source project, and one of ApeRAG’s core principles is to make production deployment as simple as possible. For that reason, we’ve integrated it with Kubeblocks ElasticSearch Addon, and in ApeRAG we provide a deployment config for out‑of‑the‑box K8s deployment.

If OpenSearch were to be added, we’d need to ensure:

• Clear modularization in the codebase
• Proper and comprehensive test coverage
• Deployment on Kubernetes that is as seamless as with Elasticsearch

My main concern is that OpenSearch deployment on K8s might be more challenging than Elasticsearch, which makes me cautious about officially supporting it. That said, I’m not opposed to the idea, and if you have a solid proposal or practical approach to address these concerns, we’d be very open to discussing it further.

We’re already working on an OpenSearch integration for our own use and would like to contribute it back.
From what I’ve seen, Kubeblocks does have support for OpenSearch, so I think this could be feasible, though of course more investigation is needed. We’re definitely down to help integrate it.

Do you have any guidance, ideas, or specific requirements that could help us get started in the right direction?
