The Cloud Native Geospatial European Ecosystem: An introduction

Summary

On September 17th I had the opportunity to give a lightning talk at the Jornadas de SIG Libre 2025, organized by the University of Girona, titled “European Ecosystem of Cloud Native Geospatial technologies” (in Spanish, "Ecosistema europeo de la tecnología geoespacial optimizada para la nube (Cloud Native Geospatial)").

The SIG Libre Conference is one of the most established open-source geospatial events in Spain, and a meeting point for the Spanish-speaking geo community (#geoinquietos).

The goal of the talk was to introduce cloud-native geospatial formats and paradigms — such as COG, GeoParquet, and STAC — and to take a quick tour of the main European organizations and initiatives adopting and promoting these technologies. Europe already has a solid ecosystem of actors that are playing a key role in this transformation: from cloud infrastructure providers to the Copernicus programme, innovative companies, and community contributors.

The session ended with an invitation to take part in a collaborative directory to strengthen the European visibility and positioning in this technological transition. A QR code and form were shared to co-create this directory and present it at future events and forums.

The goals of this post are:

  • Offer a “blog post” version of the talk, focusing on concrete examples of organizations and initiatives, including some from Indra Deimos, where I work.
  • Review other talks and workshops related to Cloud Native Geospatial presented during the conference.
  • Invite readers to fill in the form and help build the European CNG ecosystem directory.
  • Encourage participation in GeoCamp/SotMes 2025, to be held in Zaragoza next December, 13th, where contributions to the directory and an updated vision of the CNG European Ecosystem may be presented.

Why this post is relevant to Cloud Native Geo

This post contributes to connecting and mapping the European Cloud Native Geospatial ecosystem, showing how organizations and individuals are adopting CNG formats and technologies across Europe.
It also promotes collaboration and community building, linking European efforts with the global Cloud Native Geospatial movement, particularly with the Spanish-speaking #geoinquietos community, and helping to strengthen its visibility and impact... Adoption, adoption, adoption! ;-)
