[OpenJS Foundation] Bundler Collaboration Space

Hey amazing folxs maintaining ESBuild 👋, I'm Claudio from the OpenJS Foundation, I've tried to find different ways to reach out to y'all (maintainers) but unfortunately didn't find anything.

We're creating a collaboration space that aims to be a space for projects from the ecosystem to collaborate and work together on shared specifications, standardization of APIs, standardization of runtime/build/bundling behaviours, and just a space for members of the ecosystem to collaborate together. The ecosystem being the bundler tooling ecosystem.

Initial members include Vite, Webpack, Rspack, Turbopack and others and we'd love to have esbuild to also take part of it! On https://github.com/openjs-foundation/bundler-collab-space,

Would this be something esbuild is interested on? We would really really appreciate esbuild involvement here :)

Thanks for the heads up! It's great that you are creating a space for people to work on bundler-related standards together. That's not something I'm currently interested in, but you're welcome to participate without me. Specifically I'm not currently interested in attending regular meetings or participating in regular specification reviews. This is a side project that I'm doing in my free time.

Typically esbuild has tried to follow existing conventions and standards instead of trying to innovate and define new standards for others to follow. For example, I do not participate in the TC39 process but esbuild does follow the ECMAScript specification. You are welcome to file issues against esbuild if you have a feature request or a bug report about an incompatibility between esbuild and other tools. I'm also open to providing feedback on specific proposals that come out of this group in the future if that would be helpful.

Hey Evan, appreciate your reply! To be clear, the meetings are optional and only needed if there are topics folks want to discuss within a meeting, most of the work will be via GitHub. You're not obliged to participate in specification reviews. One of the key work we actually want to kick-off for the collab space is revisiting bundler behaviours (import orders, execution context, evaluation of things such as import.meta) and other points that are right now friction from bundler to bundler.

I absolutely get this is a side-project, I also volunteer to open source on my free time without getting a single penny, just out of love and care for the community.

I believe having esbuild participating on the collab space (as listed as one of the member projects) only strengthens the space as a whole; To be clear there are no requirements for attendance or obligations. You show up whenever you want, you participate whenever you want. This is meant to be an "informal" safe space for folks working on bundler/tooling ecosystem :)
