How to use translated slugs/URLs on a multi-language site?

I have a site that uses two languages. Many pages are translated and are available in both languages. There is also a blog, where some pages are translated. Using a slug meta data entry seems to be the way to specify the URL of a page. It is also helpful for linking, because one can use the link://slug/title scheme to avoid hardcoding paths.

With multiple translations of pages, I can't use the link://slug/title scheme in combination with a link://slug/translated-title, because it results in a lookup error in function slug_path(). For my purpose I added a translated-slug meta data entry, which works as expected, but I am not sure if this is a good idea or breaks things at other ends. Is this fine or is there a better - ideally integrated - solution?
