Clarification on Polar Kinematics

Web builder under advanced features, kinematics, has a polar option, so when I compile GRBLHAL with polar kinematics selected, do I still send standard XY G-code, and GRBLHAL internally converts those into polar coordinates for the stepper drives or did I misunderstand the feature?
