just edit the bots.txt file within the z_svr_bots.iwd file. Right click the file, open with 7zip and replace the names with your choice.

After looking around and testing it myself I finally got it to work on my server.

Go to your mp_bots folder, make a file called "bots.txt".
List the bot names on separate lines, make sure to add the ",BOT" after them, with no space after the comma.

Each name will have to be a on a separate line, my assumption is that it is parsed by newline characters and anything passed 15 characters is pruned. I tried putting two on the same line and the second one never showed up.

Notes: BOT doesn't need to be all caps, it'll still work. If you add an extra newline between names on accident that still works, names can have spaces in them as far as I can tell.

Character limit appears to be 15 or they get cut off: "OhNoBotNameTooLong", will show up "[BOT]OhNoBotNameTooL" in the scoreboard and OhNoBotNameTooL in the chat.

There has to be a way to get the "BOT" clan tag off of there. Ive been looking/trying for hours. i cant seem to find where the bot names are listed within the z_svr_bots.iwd file. One comment i read says you can do it. Comment reads "if you open the file while it’s zipped using 7 zip you can change the bot names and edit all different configs for the bots!" I know it can be done bc in his video they dont have the BOT clantag.

Okay so, within the "mods" folder of your mw2 installation you have the "mp_bots" folder, within that folder is the "z_svr_bots" zip file.

If you open that in WinRAR and then drag in a Text Document called "bots.txt" within that archive it should work as thats what ive done.

Here's a snippet of what my names look like and how you should lay them out in the .txt file, make sure to new line each bot name and place a comma at the end. My "bots.txt" file is like 1000 names long (i just got chatGPT to make me 1000 names lol) and IW4x will just go down that list so each game you will have a new selection of names from that list.

Just testing yesterday got a rather unexpectedly simple answer to this question.

As is being said in the other replies of this thread, you create a text document called bots.txt in the mp_bots\ directory of the mod folder once unpacked. I added this after putting the mod into my mods directory and it seems to work without any issues. You can go into the z_svr_bots folder to get it to work on a server I presume, but placing it in the directory above this seemed to work for me. (I play private matches akin to combat training, so this is my personal preference.)

As stated by HabboCodes, all you need to add to the file to make custom bot names appear in game is a list of chosen names, no more than 15 characters long, separated by a comma and line break. You do NOT need to add the "BOT" at the end of each comma -- that area is for the clan tag of the bots, and can be set to any 4-letter alphanumeric string as far as I'm aware. As such, you can make the clan tag for bots anything you wish, or nothing at all. Below, I've listed some examples from my personal bots.txt file, for which I tried to create seemingly realistic combinations of names and clan tags for something like an early X360 session.

As such, one of these bots showing up in game, such as berry88, would be formatted as [4676] berry88, as you would expect to see from a normal player. Bots without anything following the comma, such as pancakeCheff in this case, would simply show up in game as pancakeCheff. I got this answer from another thread on COD4x, where the OP seemed to want to emulate combat training bots from BO2 or thereabouts which had the 3arc clan tag. Therefore, customisation of this was not only much easier than I thought, but much more flexible.

See thats all im doing aswell, creating private matches locally, but for some reason I couldnt get it to work with simply having the "bots.txt" in the mp_bots directory. I could only seem to get it to work when I placed the .txt file within the archive.

Odd. I'm glad it still worked for you, but it seems weird that there's an incongruity. Possibly a different version of the mod, or different installation methods? I installed mine by just putting the whole mp_bots directory into the mods folder as recommended for the install package, and didn't mess with the z_svr_bots archive. Maybe if you installed in a different way, used a different version, or are running a different version of iw4x, there could be differences with how it works? Or possibly due to other mods you are using alongside mp_bots affecting the behaviour of the mod? I only have the bots mod installed with no other additional mods. Regardless, as long as it is working and you are getting the behaviour you wanted out of it, that's good.

I've attached a screenshot of my directory for the mod that shows what the configuration is that works for me. As of today, I've only experimented with bot names and their clan tags, without attempting any further modifications such as name colour. I just wanted my private matches with the mod to have a semi-realistic feel with conceivable "gamer-esque" usernames and clan tags.

Something I wish you COULD do though, unless there is a way and I am unaware of it, is have the names be randomly selected from the bots.txt list, instead of being read through in a linear fashion. This way, it would feel more like actual random matchmaking with a set playerbase, rather than looping back around to the same group of bot names. I have a few workarounds for this personally, namely just composing more and more names so that there are constant new ones, as well as using a list shuffler to reorganise the names manually, but I wish that it could be done automatically by the mod itself.

I would presume that the issue here is indeed the 4-character limit on clan tags (I believe -- I have not tested past four characters, as that wasn't something I ended up wanting to do). It could be that clan tags aren't able to be manipulated in this way, or that there is another method for making the clan tags alternative colours, but I simply haven't tested enough or don't know enough to provide any meaningful insight past this. Frankly, before your comment, I was not even aware you could make the usernames rainbow.
