nnn not repsecting mimetypes?

I am working with a custom made $file.m3u and when I can open it in mpv with mpv $file, mimeopen $file, xdg-open $file and nnn's open with (o) option. mimeopen $file informs me that the mimetype is audio/x-mpegurl and xdg-mime query default audio/x-mpegurl returns mpv.desktop as expected.

However, when I try to open it with the Return key, it opens in nvim. I assume it's because all $file.m3u is, is a text file with .m3u as an extension instead. I saw the solution for this was to include the -c flag when running nnn. The issue I have with that is that I need the -e flag to function as per the detached text guide and -cwill override it.

How can I have my cake and eat it too?

You can set a custom opener. See NNN_OPENER section in the manpage.

The script I made to generate the playlist file makes it easy enough to just run the file from it anyway so that may be what I do in the interim until I can find a better container

Or maybe I can put some sort of header in the file so that when nnn sees it, it will interpret it accordingly?

So this seems to have been fixed by swapping the -e flag for -E when launching nnn.
This option is specified by the detached text guide on the wiki but may be a temporary measure to bypass xdg-opener either while the user sets it up properly or switches to something like nuke.

We tried using .m3u, .m3u8 and .pls files. We tried adding '#EXTM3U' to the header of each file created all to no avail. When I swapped the -e option for -E the files opened in mpv as desired.

If you've been using -e, make sure to configure your openwith settings with o/^O from within nnn or with your opener of choice.
