Hi Vicky, thanks for your interest in optimagic! Unfortunately, our team does not have the capacity to participate in GSoC this year, so we are unlikely to actively mentor new contributors in 2026. We expect this to change again next year and would be happy to reconnect then. Best regards, |

Hi optimagic team 👋
I'm Vicky Sharma, a first-year B.Sc. Mathematics (Honours) student at Delhi University, India. I've been exploring NumFOCUS projects for potential GSoC 2026 contributions, and optimagic caught my attention due to my strong interest in numerical optimization and scientific computing.
My background
Strong foundation in Python, NumPy, and scientific computing
Mathematics student with a strong interest in optimization and numerical methods
Recent open-source experience contributing to aeon (time-series ML library)
Comfortable with Git/GitHub workflows and collaborative development
Why optimagic interests me
I'm particularly drawn to optimagic’s goal of providing a unified and reproducible interface for optimization workflows. The combination of mathematical rigor and practical usability aligns well with my academic background and long-term interests.
Potential project areas I’d be interested in exploring
Benchmarking and evaluation tooling — extending optimizer comparison utilities, metrics, or visualization support
Documentation and tutorials — creating beginner-friendly guides and real-world examples for common optimization workflows
Optimizer integrations — adding or improving support for additional algorithms or backends
Questions:
Is optimagic planning to participate in GSoC 2026?
If yes, are there any tentative project ideas or focus areas?
What would be the best way to start contributing and get familiar with the codebase?
I'm very happy to begin with smaller contributions (documentation, tests, or bug fixes) to learn the project and contribute meaningfully, regardless of GSoC participation.
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to your guidance.
Best regards,
Vicky Sharma
