Configuring S3 later...

I have been using Planka for myself for few days now. I installed using Docker and without S3. Now, I am thinking to add S3 bucket details. So. If I add those environments variables then will it add any impact on existing attachments? Or Do I have to redeploy by taking backup. I don't want to lose my data so asking just to be safe. Thanks.

Hey!

That's a great question. PLANKA won't automatically move all the current data to S3 when it's configured, so you'll need to move everything manually first. To do this, you can use the AWS CLI from the server folder:

aws s3 sync . s3://your-bucket-name --exclude "*" --include "public/*" --include "private/*" --exclude "*/.gitkeep" --endpoint-url https://your-s3-url

Next, to make the public folder directly accessible, you'll need to add the following policy to your S3 bucket. To do so, save this policy to a file named policy.json:

Thanks for this. But if I setup S3 then can't it work like old attachments stay on the server and accessible but new attachments go to S3 without breaking anything.

Unfortunately, it can't work that way - we don't store any information in the database about the files original location. So when you configure S3, everything will be pointed to S3, including previously uploaded files.

@meltyshev Once Planka is moved to S3, will it be able to "stream" videos, instead of first downloading them completely on the browser and then playing them? Or, is there some additional setting required for that?

Hmm… To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how video streaming works, but it should be similar to loading a video from a non-S3 attachment. Since we have full protection on attachment files and can't make them publicly accessible in S3, we fetch the stream from the S3 server and pass it straight to the response. This way, the server doesn't fully download the file - it simply re-streams it. The only question is how the browser handles that, or whether we need to configure something additional 🤔

Hi I did all that. Attachments are now going to S3 and older attachments are available as well. But it seems I can't upload large videos ..largr than 10MB as attachment. I get this error in the console:

Hey! I'm trying to figure out why this might be happening. Have you tried uploading the same video without using S3? I just want to determine whether it's caused by the S3 configuration or something else. I need to reproduce it on my end somehow...

No I can upload files to S3 directly just fine. it happens via planka. See the video... small video uploads successfully. But large videos just vanishes half way and you can see the error in the console.

Thanks for the video! I managed to reproduce the issue by trying to upload a 2GB video with S3 configured - got the same error. Working on a fix...

Just pushed the fix (thanks for reporting it!). You can update to the nightly version to get it immediately, or wait for the final v2 release - it's coming very soon :)

hey it's been so long since you said V2 will be released so I switched to nightly today. But the SSO no longer works and can't go back to earlier version as I get migration is corrupted error.

Hi! It looks like you've set OIDC_USE_OAUTH_CALLBACK=true - try commenting it out or setting it to false.

@meltyshev Thank you so much for that. It worked. All my data is intact. But the problem kind of persists. Now, it won't let me upload videos more than 100MB. I have disabled Cloudflare as well. But yes, more than 10MB videos upload work.

Nice to hear that it worked!

Regarding the 413 (Content Too Large) - it looks like this limit is configured at the proxy level, which we can't control.

We do have the MAX_UPLOAD_FILE_SIZE env variable to set a limit, but in that case the server should return a different response, and it should be handled properly by showing a toast message instead of logging an error in the console.

This could be related to #1343, as it also fails at exactly 100MB+.

It was already set to 128 MB. Anyway, I changed it to 1024MB both in .env and nginx and now it works. Thanks again for quick response.
