Add custom categories for repository organization in the left panel

The feature request

Currently, repositories in the left panel are organized under “Recent”, the GitHub account name, or “Other”.
It would be useful to have an alternative panel view that allows organizing repositories into user-defined categories :

• Create custom categories/folders for repositories.
• Organize repositories using drag & drop or a context menu option (“right-click → add to category”).
• “Filter” search bar could search for subfolder/category names.
• Subfolders/categories could be collapsible/minimizable.

Benefits

• Group repositories by project, client, or purpose.
• Improve navigation and reduce visual clutter for users with many repositories.
• Allow quicker access to frequently used groups of repositories.

I agree that something like this would be quite useful.
It would be relatively easy to allow setting a custom group name in the repository settings.
The other features you ask, like drag and drop, would be a lot harder to implement. Would simply setting the group name in the settings be enough for your use case?

Currently I'm putting aliases with a common prefix to group them alphabetically so any improvement you can do would be greatly appreciated ! I was just throwing ideas that came to my mind.

I have been using shitfkey’s repository and was not aware that you had taken over its maintenance. Thank you for continuing to maintain this project and adding so much new useful features !

PS: Do you know why my GitLab repositories still appear under “Other”?
They come from a free private GitLab group shared with a few others devs and I connected my gitlab account to github desktop plus

If the repo is hosted on gitlab.com (not self-hosted), the owner should be populated automatically.

You should do the following:

1. From the GitHub Desktop window, open the developer tools by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I
2. Go to the "Network" tab
3. Refresh the window by pressing Ctrl+Alt+R
4. See if any API request in the Network tab returned an error code
