hello out there! Any takers for pyopensci?!

hey @skasberger @gawbul there is a group of us interested in pushing pyopensci forward! We are working with @karthik and @cboettig on this!

We are keen to get a github org together to push things forward and even have some funding for support this spring. we were told that this org might be available to use for the effort and wondered if that is still the case. Please let us know if this is a discussion we can have.

I was the original founder of pyOpenSci, though due to lack of time/interest from others I had to let it go. I no longer have access to the Twitter/GitHub or domain - I think @skasberger is running things now!? I have tried to get in touch to see if I could get the accounts back, but haven't heard anything yet. Would be great to see this take off!

We are excited to build more of the community around this effort. @gawbul do you have any interest in being involved in some capacity even if it's just attending a meeting here and there (or whatever level of interest you have)? If you do please say the word as we'd love to have you stay involved. If you are super busy, we understand.

I found ropensci by chance and decided to Google for pyopensci and found this.

I am interested to port the pdftools in ropensci over to python 3.

Is this something that will be helpful?

We are just starting to pull this organization together and are so excited about it! This means that we don't quite yet have a process for review, etc like ropensci does BUT we plan to get that together in the spring. We will get back to you shortly with the process for presubmissions! Your idea sounds like a good one for python. May I ask, have you had a look at other packages out there to see if something like this exists?

I know there's a pypdf2 at pypi. https://pypi.org/pypi/PyPDF2 but apparently hasn't been updated since 2016

I am aware of tabula which is a java library focused on extracting tables from PDF

There's CERMINE another java library used by Paperity focused on academic journals https://selcuk.ayguney.com/2015/07/extracting-content-from-academic-papers-in-pdf-format/

Apparently it outperformed pypdf2 and apache pdfbox (another java library)

Full disclosure, I like to take part with helping creating this library for selfish reasons. I see it as an excellent way to better learn the existing pdftools used by ropensci and also improve my python skills.

Plus I hope to do it as part of a community. It's more fun to learn while working with other people. :)

Would love to help out where I can, but my time is very limited these days with work and home life. I would love to see pyOpenSci take off, however, and will endeavour to contribute where I can.
