Couple of announcements:

1. I'd like to introduce you Eduardo Arino de la Rubia @earino , he'll be teaching the next 3 weeks. He's been a software developer and technologist for ever and working with data for the last few years. He's currently the Chief Data Scientist at Domino Data Lab. I've also been running meetups with him and we created together the data community website http://datascience.la. You'll be in good hands.

2. Eduardo is asking all of you to bring your laptop for the next class.

3. I'd also like to introduce you Medha Uppala, PhD student, our TA for the class.

4. We'll have office hours Wed 5-6pm (before the class) PAB 2434. Week Add my favorite db overview book to reading list #2 it will our TA, week test1 #3,4 Eduardo and after that me @szilard.

5. Our TA will also have separate office hours to help you guys with the homework (1 hour/week in person, room TBD, and 1 hr/week online/Skype). She will ask you guys about what's the best day of the week/time for that.

I asked the MAS program director if any students not in the MAS program can attend the class and the answer is unfortunately no.

There are 4 students who did not fill out the google form linked above, if you are one of them please do so asap (it's part of the "participation" in your final grade).

Also make sure you "subscribe" to this github issue, so you get email notifications of further course announcements from instructor(s) and TA. I just updated the issue a few minutes ago, so if you are set up correctly, you should have received an email notification of that (check your spam folder if not).

As you know, I'll be your TA for the course this quarter. I'll be in PAB 2434 from 5 to 6pm on Wednesday for this week. Otherwise, I was considering Tuesdays 5 to 6 pm for office hours. I can also be available through Skype. If you prefer other days, let me know. My email is umedha@ucla.edu.

Greetings All!

I am excited to see you in class today. A fellow student asked, so I thought I would respond to the whole class. You don't need anything installed on your laptop for class, other than a web browser (preferably chrome or firefox.) We will be learning UNIX in the cloud today.

In order to participate today you must, however, bring your laptop, fully charged (and anyone who brings in power strips or extension cords for the class will be thanked) and make sure you have internet access on the UCLA network.

One quick followup, in class I will be asking you to sign up for Domino Data Lab. It's where I have set up the UNIX environment with all the associated tools. Please go to this link:

Scroll to the middle of the page, click on the "create your free account" button, and create an account before class starts if you have time. Use your github username as your domino username if possible. I will be walking through it during class as well, but would prefer that as many of you as possible had pre-registered on Domino.

Hi Students: As I'm finalizing the material for Weeks 5 and on, I'm thinking of giving you papers to read each week. You'll have to read what I think are the ~5 most important/useful papers someone learning/doing data science should read (all free PDFs). I'd like to add "retroactively" the 1st paper to read to Week 1 material, please read it by next class. You can find the link to the paper here.
