[Feature] Add linter to project

Describe the solution you'd like
I was wondering what your opinion is on adding a linter such as ruff. It should cover all of the current linting and formatting checks.

Additional context
I would suggest adding it to the GitHub workflow and possibly to the pre-commit hook as well.

I’d be happy to add those to the project if that works for you.
