Access control for conversations

For this, I was thinking we only display a list of conversation a user is in in the conversation page (whether it be private or public) and excluding public and private conversation a user is not a part of. If a user navigates to a public conversation, they can just join and will then on see it in the conversation page.

However, since users can't search for conversations we can exclude only private conversation a user isn't a member from the conversation page. And a user can still join a public conversation(maybe joining can mean they'll get notifications for that conversation).

I like the first option just because having a list of all public conversations in addition to private conversations that you are a part of can be a little cluttered. But what do you guys think?

I like this I wanted to do something similar to this with subscriptions I was going to make a sperate page but we could make it the main conversation page.

Oh nice, were you thinking they could could be automatically subscribed to private conversations they are a member of and have the option to subscribe/join pubic conversations? In this case maybe it'd be easier to display public conversations as well so they could easily join/subscribe or display the public ones somewhere different.

I hadn't pushed the idea that far but I could implement these things. I am not sure how to do the automatic subscriptions for private conversations. I was thinking of leaving the current situation of displayed conversation, have a button of some sort to indicate. Then display a list of links to the subscribed conversations on the profile page.

+1 for the first model. It makes sense to me that I see a list of conversations I'm part of, not every public conversation there is.
Now that we (almost) have users associated with conversations, we can have a separate work item that tracks only listing conversations that I'm part of, then we can work on joining conversations.
