After Upgraded to Kernel-6.16.0 Chromium_v138 Loss VPU Hardware Acceleration

Hi @warpme,

After upgrade to latest kernel-6.16.0, chromium_v138 loss vpu hardware acceleration. Upgraded from kernel-6.15.4 using:

sudo start 5

All 10 reboot/restart chromium_v138 does not have vpu hardware acceleration. Prior to the upgrade on kernel-6.15.4, chromium_v138 have vpu hardware acceleration at least 50% of the time.

Edit: FYI, clapper media player and mpv-full-git continue to have vpu hardware acceleration.

Hi,
I suspect your issues might be related to interferences between on-board spi stored vendor bootloader with sd card provided mainline bootloader. (e.g. I have such issue on 2 rk3588 boards in my lab).
I uploaded new images with updated bootloader where such interference seems to be fixed.
you may try and see how it goes for you.
(to test this you need boot device from sd card and do fresh install on emmc - if you are using emmc...)

Is there a way to flash just the updated bootloader on the current exiting SD Card? Instructions/commands and where to download the updated bootloader?

I do have a bootloader (most likely similar to (patched) vendor's bootloader) from Joshua Riek Ubuntu image installed on the SPI where it is used to boot up the Ubuntu on NVMe.

well - actual bootloader files are stored on sd card boot partition in /bootloader dir.
So you may update bootloader on existing sd bard by:

1. download 14.4.0 sd card image
2. mount image and copy bootloader files from /bootloader dir to your existing card dir.
3. start terminal and type "install-on-emmc bootloader" this should update bootloader on existing sdcard with new bootloader
4. reboot and see uart out: you should see 2025.10-rc1 uboot ver.

Tried to mount the newly downloaded MiniArch image with the command below but unsuccessful.

With kernel-6.15.4 (at least 50% of the time on boot up) vpu hardware acceleration is available on Chromium.

SPI u-boot bootloader is from Joshua Riek Ubuntu image and Joshua-Riek's Ubuntu on NVMe SSD.

Edit: What is interesting is that with kernel-6.16.0/6.16.1 the loss of vpu hardware acceleration is only on Chromium. mpv-full-git (with v4l2request support) and clapper media player vpu hardware acceleration is available.

Additional info: I think the u-boot version on SPI is u-boot-orangepi-rk3588-2017.09+20240401.git7f7ff61a

Out of curiosity transplanted kernel-6.16.1-koma-3pole.tar.gz compiled by Tripole (https://mega.nz/folder/GJNjjSAY#Zru4DqCa6hyYnnkGuw02Rw/file/WV9FHDyT) on Manjaro-opi5plus image, this kernel-6.16.1-koma-3pole support vpu hardware acceleration on Chromium, clapper and mpv-full-git (with v4l2request) and also seem to resolve the KDE Plasma mouse visibility issue.

Kernel-6.16.1-koma-3pole does not support hevc, 4k video on clapper or mpv-full-git it only has hantro_vpu support where your kernel-6.16.1.

So I decided to go with less worse solution: do reordering + req. to use sw cursor in wayland.
(alternative decision gives hw cursor but breaks kodi/mythtv)
hope you are agree with this decision :-)

So far software cursor works.

For troubleshooting purpose.

Transplated kernel-6.16.7-edge-rockchip64 to MiniArch-EOS-KDE image but using dtb from your kernel-6.16.8-1 as if dtb from kernel-6.16.7-edge-rockchip64 is used it would not boot up successfully to KDE Plasma Desktop. Using hardware cursor, I think.

Chromium always have vpu acceleration with kernel-6.16.7-edge-rockchip64. It seems to be using "rkvdec" vpu driver.

Whereas kernel-6.16.8-1 Chromium could not use or does not seem to be able use "rkvdec" for vpu hardware acceleration.

For troubleshooting purpose.

Transplated kernel-6.16.7-edge-rockchip64 to MiniArch-EOS-KDE image but using dtb from your kernel-6.16.8-1 as if dtb from kernel-6.16.7-edge-rockchip64 is used it would not boot up successfully to KDE Plasma Desktop. Using hardware cursor, I think.

Chromium always have vpu acceleration with kernel-6.16.7-edge-rockchip64. It seems to be using "rkvdec" vpu driver.

Whereas kernel-6.16.8-1 Chromium could not use or does not seem to be able use "rkvdec" for vpu hardware acceleration.

oh - all this looks to me more and more like miniarch & armbian are using different code for rkvdec?

I was hoping adding armbian/build@4f26990 is fix for chromium - but it looks it is not :(

So i have Q:

1. If i want to compare armbian rkvdec code with miniarch sources - for armbian kernel you are using - is https://github.com/armbian/build/tree/main/patch/kernel/archive/rockchip64-6.16 be ok?
2. What are exact steeps to reproduce chrominium issue on miniarch (i mean what i need to install and what content can demonstrate issue)
