Release v5.1.6

02 Dec 10:06

Choose a tag to compare

Windows 64-bit binaries.

This release is available through the auto-update facility in the Ctrl [A] About Box

These release notes can be read from the What's New? button in the About Box after the auto-update has completed, as well as the release notes for all previous releases.

Use Shift-[\] to open the MMP config dialog
Use Ctrl-[H] to open a [H]elp panel

Don't forget, the recommendation is to set openImage=browser and exitBrowser=exitApp and to associate all your audio, video and image file extensions with MMP using the provided mmp-install.bat file. This operates MMP as [in effect] two applications in one: the main media-playing window for playing (and editing) audio and video files, and the Image & Thumbnail Browser for viewing and managing all your image files. See the wiki to get the most from your use of MMP, particularly the MMP Config File topic

update: see Known Issues below

===== Release Notes v5.1.6 =====

FIXES

There were two notable issues when deleteMethod=recycle:

Firstly, the delete/recycle code wasn't calling the full Unicode-supported Windows API. Consequently, it wasn't clear if files that contained Unicode characters were always recycled correctly

Secondly, not all removable drives are supported by the Windows Recycle Bin. If you try to delete a file to the Recycle Bin from an unsupported drive, Windows will simply delete the file

  • For example, a standard 2TB NTFS-formatted SanDisk USB Drive is likely to be supported by the Windows Recycle Bin; conversely, a Micro SD card mounted as a drive via a USB adaptor might not be supported
  • if you have set deleteMethod=recycle and try to delete a file, MMP will now check whether that drive is supported by the Windows Recycle Bin
  • if it is, MMP will continue with the delete/recycle operation
  • if not, MMP will now warn you that continuing with the delete operation will simply delete the file(s)

e.g. for removable drives:

2025-12-01_181813 png recyclebin1

For fixed drives which have been set to not use the Windows Recycle Bin:

2025-12-01_181634 png recyclebin2

N.B. If you choose to continue, the usual confirmation dialog will appear asking if you want to delete the file(s); it will report your deleteMethod=recycle setting but will warn that you are about to delete the file rather than recycle it

KNOWN ISSUES

  1. This release broke the Ctrl-Shift-[C] cleanup of Timeline Editor files. This will be corrected on the next release. If this is a major problem for you, let me know over at Issues and I will bring forward the release of v5.1.7

  2. There is an occasional, intermittent access violation when shredding certain videos or Ctrl-[M] moving them.
    This generates a series of popup messages and MMP must be killed from a Task Manager program to prevent them.
    This happens infrequently and there currently doesn't seem to be any pattern as to which videos this will affect.
    If you think you might know why this happens to certain videos but not the vast majority, please let me know.
    Update: a possible fix for this is currently being tested

Other than that...

There are currently no known issues. If you experience one, please create a New Issue at https://github.com/BazzaCuda/MinimalistMediaPlayerX/issues and it will be investigated immediately

A Note About MPV Playback
MMP: Minimalist Media Player uses MPV as a library (aka the libmpv-2.dll file) to perform all the playback of audio and video files and to display images. If you have any playback issues, especially with video files, it may help to download a different copy of libmpv-2.dll from https://github.com/shinchiro/mpv-winbuild-cmake/releases/.
You should download any mpv-dev-x86_64-v3......7z file. -dev- is the keyword to look for in the file name.
If you have a particularly old processor then ignore the v3 files and download any other mpv-dev-x86_64......7z file instead.

Quick Install

The quickest way to get up and running with MMP is to

  1. unzip the .zip file to any folder, e.g. C:\MMP\
  2. run the mmp-install.bat file which will register all the file extensions that MMP supports*
  3. double-click any media file (audio, video, image) in your File Explorer software

* mmp-uninstall.bat unregisters them.

Any issues, please let me know (Issues)

Wiki site
The fully-detailed wiki at minimalistmediaplayer.com continues to grow. The Wiki greatly expands on the brevity of the Ctrl [H] help panels by providing comprehensive info to help you get the most out of using all of MMP's many controls and configurable options.

If there is a particular aspect of MMP that you would like more information about, let me know and I will add a topic to the Wiki or enhance an existing topic.

Feedback
All feedback, issues and suggestions should be raised in Issues or Discussions. Either is fine.

Asset files
The "...full.zip" release file below contains everything you need to run MMP: Minimalist Media Player:

  • MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe
  • MediaInfo.dll
  • libmpv-2.dll
  • ffmpeg.exe
  • ffprobe.exe
  • libeay32.dll
  • ssleay32.dll

N.B. Only MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe will be updated automatically. If the zip file contains newer versions of the other files, you should update and test these for yourself to ensure they will run on your Windows system. MMP will not make that assumption and overwrite your working versions. You are advised to make a copy of the older versions in case you need to revert to them.

===== Release Notes v5.1.5 =====

FIXES

Main Media-Player Window

  • After issuing a Ctrl-Shift-[C] to Cleanup Timeline Editing files, the progress of the deletion process wasn't being displayed correctly in the notification area in the bottom righthand corner of the window. This issue was created in the previous release trying to fix the intermittent error described below in Known Issues. As far as I know, this only occurs when the delete method is set to Shred

TWEAKS

  • When the Main Media-Player Window is centered in the middle of the screen and you Ctrl-[E] to open the Timeline Editor, the window will only be shifted left (off-center) in order to ensure that the whole of the Streams & Segments Panel is displayed and isn't cut off at the righthand edge of your monitor
  • Previously, MMP always shifted left the entire width of the Streams & Segments Panel, even when this was unnecessary
  • Now, it will only shift left the amount of pixels required to have the panel on-screen, as necessary
  • Having the editing session centered is more visually appealing

KNOWN ISSUES

This generates a series of popup messages and MMP must be killed from a Task Manager program to prevent them.

===== Release Notes v5.1.4 =====

FIXES

Main Media-Player Window

  • Following the deletion of the current media file, the item is removed from the current folder's playlist. In this scenario, MMP didn't always correctly identify which item in the playlist should be played next. This bug was introduced as an unintended, unexpected and unnoticed side-effect of the previous fix and has now, itself, been fixed
  • when deleting the final item in the playlist, or the last remaining item in the playlist, MMP will continue to the next folder if Next Folder on End or Next Folder on Empty has been set in the config dialog
  • if neither of these is set, MMP will close

===== Release Notes v5.1.2 =====

FIXES

Main Media-Player Window

  • Following a Ctrl-[M]ove of a video file to the designated user-defined "moved=" folder, an intermittent issue could occur whereby MMP would repeatedly throw an access violation, but only for some video files not others
  • this could also happen intermittently after shredding particular video files (deleteMethod=shred)
  • this required the MMP process to be ended in a Task/Process Manager
  • this release attempts to address this by forcefully stopping a video file prior to these operations
  • for consistency, this fix has also been applied to the Shift-[S]ave operation

===== Release Notes v5.1.1 =====

  • if you do a Ctrl-[Del]ete in the Image & Thumbnail Browser to delete all the remaining files in the current folder, before progressing to the Confirm Delete dialog, MMP will warn you if the folder also contains audio and/or video files which you may have overlooked while you were browsing the images. You will have the option to either proceed to the normal Confirm Delete dialog or to cancel the delete operation immediately
  • minor bug fix: when renaming an image file in the Image & Thumbnail Browser, pressing Enter/Return to close the dialog box also proceeded to the next image

===== Release Notes v5.1.0 =====

NEW

SHUFFLE

  • There is now a shuffle mode which can be toggled on and off using the Shift-[Home] key
  • this applies to all media types being played/displayed in the Main Media Window
  • if you set a playlist filter in the Shift-[\] (shift-backslash) config dialog, e.g. to audio, this will ensure that MMP doesn't display an album cover image file that you might have in the playlist folder and stop on it
  • with Shuffle set ON, the Main Media Window's image slideshow will be random rather than sequential and will run continuously. (Normally it would stop at the end of the folder/playlist)
  • during playback you can navigate to another folder/directory ([D] next folder, Ctrl-[D] prev folder) and shuffle playback will continue
  • during playback, any command for "Play Next" will select a random file in the playlist to play/display
  • you can still select any file to play immediately using the [P]laylist Panel. Shuffle will continue at the end of playing that file
  • the on/off status of Shuffle Mode will be remembered when you close and subsequently relaunch MMP
  • the [P]laylist panel will indicate whether the current playlist folder is being shuffled
  • shuffle mode doesn't affect the operations and, in particular, the slideshow of the Image & Thumbnail Browser: both slideshows deliberately operate slightly differently to one another to give you the choice of which slideshow to use in any given situation

PLAYLIST FILTER

  • A combined Audio & Video filter has been added to the Playlist Filter in the Shift-[\] (Shift-Backslash) config dialog. Ostensibly, this is so that if your music folder contains a mixture of audio files and music videos, all of them will be included in that folder's playlist
  • The playlist filter is now applied when you launch MMP regardless of the type of media file you use to launch MMP from your file explorer application
  • Regardless of the playlist filter, you can still launch 'MMP' with any type of [supported] media file
  • Regardless of the playlist filter, the launch file will always be included in the playlist even when it doesn't match the filter
  • If you launch MMP and forget that you had a playlist filter set, you can change the filter in the config dialog and then re[L]oad the playlist. The playlist will be rebuilt from the current folder
  • The file you are currently viewing will only be included in the rebuilt playlist if it matches the playlist filter
  • If it doesn't match, when the end of that file is reached, MMP will continue with the first item in the rebuilt playlist, or a random item if Shuffle is on
  • If you intentionally launch MMP with a file that doesn't match your playlist filter, you can immediately eliminate it from the playlist using re[L]oad playlist
  • This way, you can view an album's artwork and then listen to the album on shuffle without the album artwork appearing again
  • Note, if you have "open image(s) in browser" set, you can drop out of the Image & Thumbnail Browser back to the Main Media Window with Ctrl-[X], and then re[L]oad and play the rebuilt playlist

FIXED

  • with the "Next Folder on Empty [folder]" setting OFF, the Main Media Window and the Image & Thumbnail Browser now close the application correctly any time you perform a command which, in effect, clears the remaining playable/viewable items in the playlist folder:
    • [Del]ete the one remaining file in a folder
    • Ctrl-[Del]ete all remaining files in a folder
    • Ctrl-[K]eep/Delete all files not marked as [K]eep
    • in the Main Media Window: Ctrl-[M]ove or Shift-[M]ove the one remaining file to the "Moved" user-defined folder
    • in the Main Media Window: Shift-[S]ave the one remaining file to the user-defined "Saved" folder
    • in the Image & Thumbnail Browser: [S]ave the one remaining image to the user-defined "Saved" folder

N.B. after Ctrl-[K]eep/Delete, when you're left with just the [K]eep files in a folder, MMP reasonably assumes you're now done managing the files in the playlist folder and treats this situation just like any other end-of-playlist/end-of-folder condition, applying the "Next Folder on Empty [folder]" setting

Choose a tag to compare

Windows 64-bit binaries.

This release is available through the auto-update facility in the Ctrl [A] About Box if you have v2.2.2 or later and the libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll files in your MMP folder

These release notes can be read from the What's New? button in the About Box after the auto-update has completed

Use Shift-[\] to open the new MMP config dialog

Don't forget, the recommendation is to set openImage=browser and exitBrowser=exitApp and to associate all your audio, video and image file extensions with MMP using the provided mmp-install.bat file. This operates MMP as [in effect] two applications in one: the main media-playing window for playing (and editing) audio and video files, and the Image & Thumbnail Browser for viewing and managing all your image files. See the wiki to get the most from your use of MMP, particularly the MMP Config File topic

===== Release Notes v5.0.2 =====

NEW

  • With the "Next Folder on End [of playlist]" option set ON, when any command or situation requires MMP to move to the next (or previous) folder, MMP will find the next (or previous) folder on your drive that actually contains multimedia files that can be played/displayed, rather than simply navigating to a possibly empty folder and doing nothing
  • Similarly, with the "Next Folder on Empty [folder]" set ON, when any command clears the playlist for the current folder, MMP will find the next folder that contains multimedia content, build a new playlist, and continue playing
  • If you have a playlist filter set to only build playlists of either images, audio or video files in each folder, this filter is now applied to all navigation functions (next/prev file, next/prev folder), rather than only when you're playing a "slideshow" of just the filter format.
  • This brings all the navigation functionality in the Main Media Window into line with that of the playlist "slideshow" (which can play through all the multimedia files on your entire drive, filtering for a particular media type if required)
  • Note: In the Image & Thumbnail Browser, if you navigate to the "previous" folder or the "next folder" using the up and down arrow keys, it will always skip over folders that don't contain any images and "play" the next folder it finds that does, regardless of the "Next Folder on End [of playlist]" setting
  • The Image & Thumbnail Browser will, however, take note of the "Next Folder on Empty [folder]" setting if you delete the final image in a folder: with the setting ON, it will navigate to the next folder that contains an image and display it
  • In the Ctrl-[A] About Box, you can now view the release notes for previous releases by selecting a version from the drop down list attached to the What's New?/Release Notes button. The zip file contains all previous release notes which you can unzip to your "releaseNotes" folder if you already have MMP installed. (All previous release notes are also available to read at https://minimalistmediaplayer.com/mmp/releases, and doing so will give you a good appreciation of MMP's capabilities)
  • Ctrl-Shift-[R] to quickly rename a file by replacing all "Dirty Characters" with a space is now also available in the Image & Thumbnail Browser

CHANGES

  • When editing an audio or video file, the rules for which characters can be present in a path/file name have been relaxed. They were too Latin Alphabet-centric and prevented the editing of any path/file name that contained diacritics, Cyrillic, Chinese or other types of Unicode characters. This wasn't the intention. Apostrophes will break the Export and Join functionality, so this is all that is now checked for prior to opening the Audio & Video Timeline Editor
  • As a result of the above change, the "Dirty Chars" config option (see the [Shift-Backslash] Config Dialog) now only applies to the Ctrl-Shift-[R] "Clean File Name" function. With this you can instantly remove characters that you consider superfluous to the file name; for example, where files have been named with dots instead of spaces. Ctrl-Shift-[R] only changes the main part of the file name: the extension and the dot that precedes it are ignored. (any accompanying .mmp file will also be renamed)

FIXED

  • The anomaly that sometimes prevented the application from closing (or being closed) on end of playlist when the "Next Folder on End [of playlist]" option was OFF, has been fixed

===== Release Notes v5.0.1 =====

Minor Bug Fix for v5.0.0
eXiting or Escaping from the Image & Thumbnail Browser resulted in a blank Main Media Window which had to be killed in Task Manager/Process Explorer.

Note: the new wiki article on keyframes is now available at https://minimalistmediaplayer.com/video/keyframes;
there is also an example editing session at https://minimalistmediaplayer.com/video/editingexample showing how to use the new keyframes functionality to achieve clean edits.

===== Release Notes v5.0.0 =====

NEW - KeyFrames
During video editing, you can turn on "keyframes" to help you decide where to begin a segment so that it only includes the portion of the video that you want, and to make your cuts as clean as possible with no extraneous prior content included.
To enable the keyframes functionality you will need to unpack "ffprobe.exe" from the release .zip file and include it in the same folder as the MMP executable.

It is highly recommended that you read the new wiki article "Video KeyFrames" at minimalistmediaplayer.com (https://minimalistmediaplayer.com/video/keyframes) which explains this new feature in detail. You can get to the wiki from within MMP using Ctrl-[W].

Another wiki article "Video Editing Example" is currently being written which will highlight, with video examples, the different choices FFmpeg has to make depending on whether you use keyframes or not to define your segments.

A Brief Summary
With the Audio & Video Timeline Editor open, you turn keyframes on and off for videos using the [F]rames key.

This will create a .key file using ffprobe which lists all the keyframes in a video.
You don't have to wait for ffprobe to finish: you can start editing and MMP will report "keyframes on" in the notification area (bottom right corner) and will briefly flash the progress bar a fluorescent purply color when ffprobe has finished creating the .key file.

If the .key file already exists and its modified timestamp is later than that of the video, MMP will reuse it and "keyframes on" for the current video will be instantaneous. Otherwise, MMP will recreate the .key file.

Note: depending on the format of the video and the codec used to encode it, ffprobe can take several minutes to create the .key file; for example, even a 10-minute 4K 60fps VP9 .webm video on a high-spec Windows machine can take 6-7 minutes. Other less taxing videos, even feature-length movies at 1920x800, only take a few seconds.

The Timeline Editor then color codes the vertical cursor to match the locations of the keyframes relative to the point in the video that you're looking at:

White Cursor
cursorwhite

This is the vertical cursor's default color. White indicates that the previous keyframe is more than 1.0 seconds prior to this point.
If you create a segment here, there is a strong likelihood that FFmpeg will have to include content prior to this point in order to ensure that the part of the video you're looking at will be included in your exported segment.

In a 4K animation with 60 keyframes per second, you are unlikely to ever see a white cursor. With such a video, turning on keyframes is largely pointless (except maybe to confirm that they're not required), as the start of every segment you create will be so close to the prior keyframe that exported segments will likely start exactly where you want them to. (see the purple cursor below)

Yellow Cursor
cursoryellow

A yellow cursor indicates that the current point in the video is between 0.5 seconds and 1.0 seconds after the previous keyframe. Depending on how FFmpeg is able to determine its seek point you might get away with creating the segment here and FFmpeg might not have to include prior content in order to make the cut at this point. You will need to check the exported segment to see what FFmpeg has done, hence the yellow "warning".

Purple Cursor
cursorpurple

A purple cursor shows that this point in the video is less than 0.5 seconds after the most recent keyframe. This is the optimum point at which to create a segment if you want a clean cut - the "purple patch", if you will. There is a high likelihood that the n-second segment you create here is exactly what you'll get.

In a 4K animation with 60 keyframes per second, you will likely only ever see a purple cursor. The distances between most keyframes will only be measured in 100ths of a second, maybe 0.01 to 0.02 seconds. Not enough for even a yellow cursor. This means that wherever you want to start a segment is likely to be almost the exact point FFmpeg is able to determine its seek point. The resulting n-seconds of exported footage will match almost exactly with your defined segment, with maybe give or take an intermediate frame or two.

Estimated Export Time
Using keyframes and starting segments at "purple points" will also mean that the estimated length of your exported video (shown in the bottom right corner of the Segments & Streams Panel) will very closely match the length of the video that FFmpeg creates, often exactly.

Timeline Editing Cleanup
Keyframe .key files are now included in the Ctrl-Shift-[C]leanup of Timeline editing artifacts, along with .mmp, .seg, .log and .segnn. files. If you want to keep a particular .key file, simply rename it to, for example, .txt before doing Ctrl-Shift-[C].

Skip Excluded Segments
Using keyframes to define the start of your segments will make using Ctrl-[S] to skip excluded segments during playback an even more accurate representation of how the exported video will play.

Audio Editing
Note: when editing audio files, your segments will almost exactly match what's exported.

Other New Features
In the Audio & Video Timeline Editor when you create a new segment, the Segments & Streams Panel will scroll the new segment into view.

Fixes

  • If, after dragging the Main Media Window around the desktop while editing, you then re-center MMP horizontally (and vertically) using [H], the Timeline Editor and the Segments & Streams Panel will now reposition themselves correctly.
  • Various other minor tweaks and bug fixes.

Quick Install

The quickest way to get up and running with MMP is to

  1. run the mmp-install.bat file which will register all the file extensions that MMP supports*
  2. rename the example MinimalistMediaPlayer.conf_ file by removing the _ so that MMP uses it
