This PR is to demonstrate the sizes of ruff related changes - do not merge. I tried to create the simplest ruff format config and excluded the linter to keep the changes minimal. I think the nature of the repo (people call this coding style "scientific" afaik) is a bit different than the "normal" Python styling so ruff generates a huge diff.
