It emits an ultrasonic wave and count the time till the wave hot the object and gets returned as an echo.As the distance is measured twice,the result has to be made half. So,distance =(Speed * Time taken)/2.

    Its important to care about the shape and position of the object.If not the wave will gets deflected instead of reflecting
