An extremely lightweight, zero-deployment macOS menu bar widget used to monitor NVIDIA GPU status on remote servers via SSH.
RemoteGPU-Bar is a SwiftBar plugin based on Shell scripting. It connects to your Linux server via SSH, executes the nvidia-smi command, and parses the results into a beautiful, intuitive macOS menu bar display.

Before using this plugin, please ensure you meet the following conditions:
- macOS: Your computer is a Mac.
- SwiftBar: Installed SwiftBar (a free and open-source menu bar customization tool).
- Passwordless SSH Login: Your Mac must be configured with SSH key pairs and be able to log in to the target server without a password.

Download the Script: Download the
gpu_monitor.1m.shfile from this repository to your local computer. (Note: The.1m.in the filename represents a refresh every 1 minute; you can modify this as needed). -
Add to Plugin Folder: Open SwiftBar, click the menu bar icon ->
Open Plugin Folder..., and drop the downloaded.shfile into that directory. -
Grant Execution Permissions: Open your terminal and run the following command (replace the path with your actual plugin directory):
chmod +x ~/Documents/SwiftBar/gpu_monitor.1m.sh
You need to modify the script file to match your server information.
Open gpu_monitor.1m.sh using a text editor (Recommended: VSCode, Sublime Text, or terminal nano; do not use the default macOS TextEdit).
Modify the configuration area at the top of the script:

Save the file. SwiftBar will usually detect the change and refresh automatically. You can also manually click the menu bar -> Refresh All.Q: Menu bar shows "GPU: Offline 🔴"? A: This means the SSH connection failed. Please check: Whether your network can connect to the server. Whether the HOST and ID_FILE paths in the script are correct. Click the menu to view the red error message details. If it says "Host verification failed," please connect to the server manually once in the terminal and type yes to accept the host fingerprint.
Q: Why is the text in the menu gray? A: Ensure you are using the latest version of the script. The script must include interactive attributes like refresh=true or shell=... for macOS to render it in the normal highlight color.
Q: How do I change the refresh frequency? A: Change the middle part of the script filename. For example, changing .1m. to .30s. sets the refresh to every 30 seconds. It is recommended not to go below 10s to avoid unnecessary SSH connection pressure on the server.
Q：How to use with Slurm clusters? A：Since Slurm head nodes usually don't have GPUs, you should modify the nvidia-smi command in the script to use Slurm's native commands. For example, use squeue -u $USER to monitor your own job's GPU usage, or sinfo to monitor cluster-wide GPU availability.
