Design work considerations

There are additional considerations for design work, such as for editing content or updating a Figma design. These considerations are important for maintaining our systems and sources of truth, and making sure everything is consistent. For reference, they are listed below as things to check, and can be adapted as acceptance criteria (ACs) for GitHub issue tickets.

Checklist for design updates

Instructions specific to new feature work or updating existing pages

  • Created a new page with the issue number and title, like "Issue ####: DS data page redesign and accessibility fixes" in Figma
  • Used components from the Figma design system wherein possible
  • When ready to hand off to dev, followed Design<>Dev Handoff Guide

Instructions specific to updating Figma templates to match production

  • Merged draft design(s) into the official registrar or get.gov Figma pages
  • (If applicable) Updated components from the Figma design system if there are any inconsistencies with production
  • (If applicable) Updated Design System documentation with any changes that affect Components, Patterns, Templates, etc.
  • Updated annotations where applicable

Checklist for content updates

Followed the content guide instructions, including:

  • Used official terms in the word list when possible, avoiding synonyms or alternative terms
  • Used content blocks when possible, and considered whether new content blocks were needed
  • Checked for readability using the Hemingway Editor
  • Ensured that external links have an external link icon and open in a new tab

  • Updated the relevant documents in Google Drive's "Content > Email" folder
  • Updated the spreadsheet that documents email triggers and recipients if there was a change to those interactions.
