Your topic idea for Project 1:

We propose to investigate the energy consumption of short-form video playback across two popular platforms: TikTok and Instagram Reels. We focus on measuring how much energy is consumed when watching the same short video under controlled conditions - TikTok vs Instagram (same video content) and Google Chrome vs Mozilla Firefox (same browser environment comparison). This will result in a 2x2 experimental design of TikTok on Chrome, TikTok on Firefox, Instagram on Chrome, Instagram on Firefox. Our goal is to analyze whether differences in platform implementation and browser rendering engines lead to measurable differences in energy and power usage.

Hi!

This seems like a good topic for Project 1. Make sure to properly motivate your choices in your final report (why is this relevant?) Also try to come up with some actionable insights from your results that can be used by browser/Instagram/TikTok developers to improve efficiency. Research and discuss possible reasons that could be behind the differences in efficiency.

Good luck!
