Updating DOIs with a Spreadsheet
Updating DOIs is very similar to reserving DOIs, except you will be updating the metadata of the DOIs from default metadata to the metadata of the resource and the resource will be findable in DataCite's platform. Without updating the DOI, you are left with a DOI that doesn't lead anywhere, so it is important to update DOIs when the resource has been published in its final location. Updating DOIs is easy. Ensure you have filled out the metadata spreadsheet with as much information as possible with as many headings as possible.
Open the DOI headings CSV or XLSX file, whichever you prefer. Ensure all the headings are present and you understand what each heading means. If you are unsure on any headings, consult the table on Preparing Files for the Program.
For each reserved DOI you wish to update, fill out each row of the spreadsheet with metadata about that resource. Fill out the sheet as completely as you can. Be sure to include any ORCID IDs for authors, contributors, contracting officers/grant managers and any other person after their name with a "|" character.
Once your XLSX or CSV file is ready, save as a CSV in your local instance of the DOI Parser program. Then proceed to the instructions on Running the DOI Parser Python File. The instructions are the same whether running a DOI reserve or a DOI update.
