Aim

A five-day working meeting was held in Seattle, Washington 19-23 August 2024, to finalize the structure of the proposed BDQ Core Standard, and to complete as much of the first draft as possible.

Participants

  • Lee Belbin
  • Paul Morris
  • John Wieczorek
  • Arthur Chapman
  • Yi-Ming Gan (Virtual - Part Time)

Work

The focus of the Seattle meeting was to agree on a structure for the BDQ Core standard documents and to write as much as we could of the first draft. This was work that was impossible to be carried out without meeting physically. Paul and Arthur focused on getting the vocabularies and Framework Ontology and associated namespaces into a form where they could be slotted into the relevant documents. John focussed on the structure of the documents and drafting the Introduction. Lee focussed on rationalizing existing inconsistencies and drafting the Supplemental document.

Outcome

The structure of the BDQ Core standard documentation was agreed and that it would be based on the structure of the Darwin Core standard. It was recognized however that the BDQ Core standard would be far more complex than Darwin Core. An outline of many of the documents were completed with the final editing to take place remotely in the following months. The results can be found at https://github.com/tdwg/bdq/blob/master/tg2/_review/index.md.

Support

We are very grateful for the support from the TDWG Executive for a Community Support Grant that covered the travel of Arthur Chapman and Lee Belbin, and for the accommodation for Paul, Arthur and Lee in Seattle.
