For new development I'd almost always recommend Postgres, but for continuing to develop existing applications that used MySQL, MariaDB is more up-to-date, and convenient.

They provide default gnu/libc builds for Linux and Windows builds that are easy to install and configure.

The releases API seems to be manually generated (lots of inconsistencies), but it works for the LTS version (and hopefully will in the future).
