With new architectural understanding, we can abstract peripherals into more logical and ''standardized'' units, so that we can have a more harmonious, efficient means to interact with our processing and data and the world (from the processors point of view: printers, displays, audio, ...).

Just as the OS itself, one could also consider scaling these hardware items, much like the LittleBits hardware toys, until you have bigger, modular units that can perform whatever interaction you want (robotics?).
