2.1 Label, description and “also known as” list for research expedition items

Label, description and "also known as" portions of the Wikidata item are intended to help name, describe and disambiguate the item. See https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Label for more information on how to label and describe an item. Please note this Wikidata help document is not Wikidata policy.

Editors of research expedition items should think strategically when labelling and describing an item. Think about how others will be wanting to link to or reuse the Wikidata item identifier and its accompanying label, description and "also known as" list, either with external to Wikidata identifiers or by adding the Wikidata QID to their collection management systems. Information provided in the label, description and comprehensive list of “also known as” labels are vital for this reuse to be accomplished efficiently.

Label and also known as list

It is recommended that the most common name for the expedition, i.e. that used in scholarly publications and on the internet, be used as the main title. If possible and appropriate the date range of the expedition should also be added to the label in brackets. This would assist in distinguishing the expedition from similarly named items. Alternative names should be added as is needed to the "also known as" section of the item. This increases the likelihood of the item being found and linked to in other databases and reduces the possibility of duplicate items being created for a particular research expedition.

Description

The description of the expedition should, if possible and appropriate, contain a reference to the country of origin and then the type or purpose of the expedition, the general location of the expedition and a statement of the timing of the expedition. For example: British botanical collecting expedition to Yunnan, China from 1901 to 1903
